🐢 Fix a Slow Computer

Your PC feeling sluggish? Follow these steps in order. Most users see 40–60% speed improvement after completing all steps.

💡 Complete all steps in order. Restart after step 5. Total time: ~20 minutes.
1

Restart Your Computer

The simplest fix. A restart clears RAM, applies pending updates, and fixes many temporary slowdowns. If you haven't restarted in days, do it now.

2

Check Task Manager for Heavy Processes

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Click "CPU" column to sort → Kill any unknown processes using >50% CPU.

taskmgr
3

Run Disk Cleanup

Press Win + R, type cleanmgr, select C: drive, check all boxes including "System files". This removes temp files, old Windows installs, and recycle bin.

cleanmgr
4

Disable Startup Programs

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Startup tab → Right-click and Disable everything except antivirus and audio drivers.

5

Run SFC System File Check

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the system file checker. This repairs corrupted Windows files automatically.

sfc /scannow
6

Check for Malware

Download and run Malwarebytes Free Scan. Many slowdowns are caused by hidden malware running in background.

7

Defragment HDD (Not SSD)

If you have a traditional hard drive (HDD), defragment it. Do NOT defragment SSDs. Check via Disk Defragmenter.

dfrgui
8

Increase Virtual Memory (Page File)

Search "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" → Advanced → Virtual Memory → Change to System Managed.

⚠️ If PC is still slow after all steps, it may need hardware upgrade (RAM or SSD). Contact REDPC for a hardware assessment.
🧹 Clean Temp Files & Free Up Space

Accumulated temp files slow down your PC and waste disk space. Here's how to clean them safely.

📁 Method 1: Windows Temp Folder
1

Open Temp Folder

Press Win + R, type %temp% and press Enter. Select all files (Ctrl+A) and delete. Skip any files in use.

%temp%
2

Open Windows Temp

Press Win + R, type temp and press Enter. Delete all files here too (administrator temp files).

temp
3

Clear Prefetch

Press Win + R, type prefetch, delete all files inside. This clears old program launch cache files.

prefetch
🧽 Method 2: Disk Cleanup Tool
4

Run Disk Cleanup with System Files

Search "Disk Cleanup" → Select C: drive → Click "Clean up system files" → Check all boxes → OK. Can free 5–20 GB on most systems.

cleanmgr /sageset:1
⚙️ Method 3: Storage Sense (Windows 10/11)
5

Enable Storage Sense

Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense → Turn ON → Configure Storage Sense → Run Now. Automatically cleans temp files regularly.

💡 Run these steps monthly. For automated cleaning, REDPC can set up scheduled maintenance as part of an AMC.
🚀 Speed Up Windows Startup

A slow startup is usually caused by too many programs auto-starting. These steps reduce boot time significantly.

1

Disable Startup Programs via Task Manager

Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup tab → Sort by "Startup impact" → Right-click and Disable anything with "High" impact except antivirus.

2

Enable Fast Startup

Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Turn on fast startup. Reduces cold boot time by 30–50%.

3

Use msconfig for Services

Win+R → type msconfig → Services tab → Check "Hide all Microsoft services" → Disable remaining unused services.

msconfig
4

Update Windows & Drivers

Outdated drivers cause slow boots. Run Windows Update, then update chipset, graphics, and storage controller drivers.

winver
5

Consider SSD Upgrade

The single biggest startup speed improvement. Upgrading from HDD to SSD typically reduces boot time from 60-90 seconds to under 10 seconds.

💾 Fix High RAM Usage

Windows showing 80–90% RAM usage constantly? Here's how to find the culprit and fix it.

1

Identify What's Using RAM

Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Memory column → Sort descending. Identify programs using the most memory. Close unnecessary apps.

2

Disable SysMain / Superfetch

Search "Services" → Find SysMain → Right-click → Stop → Startup type: Disabled. This prevents Windows pre-loading programs into RAM.

services.msc
3

Reduce Browser Tab Count

Each Chrome/Edge tab uses 100–300MB RAM. Use tab suspend extensions (like "The Great Suspender") to freeze inactive tabs.

4

Adjust Virtual Memory

System Properties → Advanced → Performance Settings → Advanced → Virtual Memory → Set to "System managed size".

5

Scan for Malware

Memory-resident malware is a common cause of high RAM usage. Run a full Malwarebytes scan to check.

🌡️ Fix PC Overheating

Overheating causes slowdowns, shutdowns, and long-term hardware damage. Act immediately if your PC is hot.

🔴 If PC shuts down on its own, stop using it immediately until the cause is found. This prevents permanent CPU/GPU damage.
1

Check Current Temperatures

Download HWMonitor or Core Temp. Normal CPU: under 75°C under load. Over 90°C = serious overheating.

2

Clean Dust from Vents

Use compressed air to blow dust out of all vents. Laptop vents on bottom and sides. Desktop: open case and clean CPU fan, PSU, and GPU.

3

Ensure Proper Airflow

Don't block laptop vents. Don't use on bed/carpet. Place desktop with front intake facing open space, not against a wall.

4

Reapply Thermal Paste (Advanced)

For PCs over 3 years old, thermal paste dries out. Professional reapplication can drop temperatures by 15–25°C.

5

Set Power Plan to Balanced

Control Panel → Power Options → Select "Balanced" instead of "High Performance". Reduces heat generation when idle.

💡 REDPC offers professional laptop and desktop cleaning services. Book an AMC for regular preventive maintenance.
📶 No Internet Connection Fix

Follow these steps in order. Most internet issues are solved within the first 4 steps.

1

Restart Router & Modem

Unplug router power for 30 seconds, then plug back in. Wait 2 minutes for full reconnection. Most common fix.

2

Check Other Devices

If other devices (phone) have internet, problem is with your PC, not the router. If all devices fail, call your ISP.

3

Run Windows Network Troubleshooter

Right-click network icon in taskbar → Troubleshoot problems. Windows will auto-diagnose and fix common issues.

4

Reset TCP/IP Stack

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands one by one:

netsh int ip reset

netsh winsock reset

ipconfig /flushdns
5

Update Network Adapter Driver

Device Manager → Network Adapters → Right-click your adapter → Update driver. Outdated drivers cause connection drops.

devmgmt.msc
6

Disable & Re-enable Network Adapter

Device Manager → Network Adapters → Right-click → Disable → Wait 5 seconds → Enable again.

🐌 Fix Slow Internet Speed

Getting less speed than your plan? Here's how to diagnose and fix slow internet on your PC.

1

Test Your Speed First

Use our Speed Test tool on this website, or go to fast.com. Note your download and upload speeds. Compare with your ISP plan.

2

Check Who's Using Bandwidth

Task Manager → Performance → Open Resource Monitor → Network tab. See which app is consuming bandwidth. Pause updates if Windows Update is running.

3

Change DNS to Google or Cloudflare

Network Settings → Adapter Properties → IPv4 → Use custom DNS. Google: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 — Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1

4

Use Ethernet Instead of Wi-Fi

Wired connection is always faster and more stable. If possible, plug directly into the router with an Ethernet cable.

5

Disable Background Apps

Settings → Privacy → Background apps → Turn off all non-essential apps from running in background.

📡 Fix Wi-Fi Connection Issues

Wi-Fi drops, won't connect, or shows "No Internet Secured"? Follow these steps.

1

Forget & Reconnect to Wi-Fi

Click Wi-Fi icon → Find your network → Click "Forget" → Reconnect with password. Fixes authentication errors.

2

Flush DNS and Renew IP

Run as Administrator:

ipconfig /release && ipconfig /flushdns && ipconfig /renew
3

Change Wi-Fi Channel on Router

Log into router (192.168.1.1) → Wireless settings → Change channel from Auto to 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz. Avoids interference from neighbors.

4

Update Wi-Fi Adapter Driver

Device Manager → Network Adapters → Right-click Wi-Fi adapter → Update driver. Many Wi-Fi issues are driver bugs.

5

Set Wi-Fi to Maximum Performance

Device Manager → Wi-Fi Adapter → Properties → Power Management → Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

🔢 Fix DNS Error & Website Not Loading

"DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" or "ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED"? Here's the fix.

1

Flush DNS Cache

Open Command Prompt as Administrator:

ipconfig /flushdns
2

Change to Public DNS

Control Panel → Network → Adapter → IPv4 Properties → Use these DNS servers:
Preferred: 8.8.8.8 (Google) | Alternate: 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare)

3

Restart DNS Client Service

Win+R → services.msc → Find "DNS Client" → Restart the service.

net stop dnscache && net start dnscache
4

Clear Browser DNS Cache

Chrome: type chrome://net-internals/#dns → Click "Clear host cache". Edge: edge://net-internals/#dns → Clear host cache.

🖨️ Fix Printer Offline Error

Printer shows "Offline" even when powered on and connected? Here's how to fix it.

1

Set Printer as Default & Online

Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Right-click your printer → "See what's printing" → Printer menu → Uncheck "Use Printer Offline".

2

Clear Print Queue

In the printer window → Cancel all documents. A stuck print job causes "offline" status. Delete all pending jobs.

3

Restart Print Spooler Service

Run as Administrator:

net stop spooler && net start spooler
4

Remove and Re-add Printer

Devices and Printers → Right-click printer → Remove → Add a printer → Let Windows auto-detect it.

5

Check IP Address (Network Printers)

For network printers, print a configuration page from the printer's own menu and verify the IP address matches in Windows settings.

📦 Reinstall Printer Driver Properly

Corrupt printer drivers cause constant errors. A clean reinstall solves most printer software issues.

1

Completely Remove Current Driver

Settings → Apps → Search for your printer software → Uninstall. Then: Devices and Printers → Remove the printer device.

2

Remove from Print Management

Run as admin: printmanagement.msc → Drivers → Delete all entries for your printer brand.

printmanagement.msc
3

Restart Print Spooler

net stop spooler && net start spooler
4

Download Fresh Driver

Go to Downloads page → Printer Drivers section → Download the latest driver from your printer's official manufacturer website.

5

Install & Test Print

Run the downloaded driver installer. Follow the wizard. When done, print a test page from Devices and Printers.

🦠 Virus & Malware Removal Steps

Symptoms: slow PC, unknown programs, browser redirects, random popups? Follow this removal guide.

🔴 Do not enter passwords, do banking, or access sensitive accounts on an infected PC until fully cleaned.
1

Disconnect from Internet

Unplug Ethernet or disable Wi-Fi. This prevents the malware from sending data or downloading more files.

2

Boot into Safe Mode

Hold Shift while clicking Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Safe Mode with Networking.

3

Run Windows Defender Full Scan

Windows Security → Virus protection → Scan options → Full scan. Let it complete fully (may take 1-2 hours).

4

Run Malwarebytes Scan

Download Malwarebytes (see Downloads page) → Run full scan → Quarantine all threats found.

5

Run ADWCleaner for Adware

Run ADWCleaner scan. Removes browser hijackers, toolbars, and adware that antivirus sometimes misses.

6

Reset Browser Settings

Chrome/Edge: Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to original defaults. Removes hijacked homepage and extensions.

💡 If infection persists, REDPC offers professional virus removal and Windows reinstallation services. Contact us for on-site support.
🔄 Fix Windows Update Stuck / Failed

Windows Update stuck at 0%, failing, or showing errors? Here's the fix.

1

Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run.

2

Clear Windows Update Cache

Run as Administrator — these commands stop update service, clear cache, and restart:

net stop wuauserv

rd /s /q C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

net start wuauserv
3

Run DISM & SFC

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

sfc /scannow
4

Use Windows Update Assistant

Download "Windows 10/11 Update Assistant" from Microsoft directly. It bypasses common update errors.

💙 Fix Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

Random blue screens (BSODs) can be caused by drivers, RAM, storage, or hardware faults.

🔴 Note the error code shown on the BSOD screen (e.g., MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). It helps identify the cause.
1

Note the Error Code

BSOD shows an error code starting with 0x or a name like IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Google this code + "fix" for targeted solutions.

2

Check Event Viewer for Cause

Win+R → eventvwr → Windows Logs → System → Look for Critical errors around the time of crash.

eventvwr
3

Update or Roll Back Recent Drivers

BSODs after Windows Update are often driver-related. Device Manager → Right-click problem device → Roll back driver.

4

Run Memory Diagnostic

Win+R → mdsched → Restart now and check for memory problems. Detects faulty RAM modules.

mdsched
5

Run SFC and DISM

sfc /scannow
6

Test with One RAM Stick

If you have multiple RAM sticks, remove one at a time and test. Faulty RAM is a very common BSOD cause.

⚠️ Frequent BSODs may indicate failing hardware. Contact REDPC for a professional hardware diagnostic before data loss occurs.
❌ PC Not Booting / Won't Start

PC turns on but won't boot? Shows black screen or error? Follow this systematic guide.

1

Check Power and Connections

Verify power cable is firmly connected. For desktops, check if PSU switch is ON (I = on, O = off). Try a different power outlet.

2

Remove External Devices

Unplug all USB drives, external hard disks, and peripherals except keyboard and mouse. Some BIOSes try to boot from USB first.

3

Access Windows Recovery

Force-shutdown 3 times in a row (hold power button). Windows will automatically open Recovery Environment on next boot.

4

Run Startup Repair

Recovery Environment → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Repair. Windows will auto-fix boot issues.

5

Use Command Prompt in Recovery

Recovery → Troubleshoot → Advanced → Command Prompt → Run bootfix commands:

bootrec /fixmbr && bootrec /fixboot && bootrec /rebuildbcd
💡 If none of these work, it's likely a hardware failure (dead SSD, failed RAM, or corrupted Windows). Call REDPC for emergency on-site support.
🔊 Fix No Sound / Audio Issues

No sound from speakers or headphones? Here's a systematic fix.

1

Check Volume & Mute

Click the speaker icon in taskbar. Ensure volume isn't 0 or muted. Check the volume mixer — some apps may be individually muted.

2

Check Output Device Selection

Right-click speaker icon → Open Sound settings → Output → Make sure correct device is selected (Speakers, not headphones if none are connected).

3

Run Audio Troubleshooter

Right-click speaker icon → Troubleshoot sound problems. Windows will auto-detect and fix common audio issues.

4

Restart Windows Audio Service

Win+R → services.msc → Windows Audio → Restart the service.

net stop audiosrv && net start audiosrv
5

Update Audio Driver

Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers → Right-click audio device → Update driver. Or download from motherboard manufacturer's website.
